Abstract

An innovative teaching programme was launched in 2023 for 22 M2 students at the University of Toulouse – Ecole d’ingénieurs de Purpan, aiming at training them on quantitative water management in agriculture. The programme combined three components: a socio-economic analysis of an agricultural region, based on a diachronic and systemic approach to understand the diversity of agricultural production systems and the role of irrigation water access conditions in their development process; the use of supportive modelling (ComMod) through the design of a serious game; and deploying this game for non-specialist audiences, which involved the students to act as science communicators. The experience highlighted the students’ growing skills in analysing, formalising and communicating knowledge on a controversial issue.

The serious game ‘Eau Défi’, developed as part of this process, was subsequently rolled out to 600 participants (from secondary and higher education, as well as socio-professional stakeholders) to raise their awareness of water management issues. An initial assessment of its contribution to the acquisition of technical skills concluded that, across these different groups, participants gained a better understanding of the complexity of the issues. The varying exposure of production systems to climate risks, linked, amongst other things, to inequalities in access to water, as well as the sometimes-conflicting interests that guide the farms management were highlighted. Feedback from these sessions provides reflections not only on the educational uses of this game but also on its potential as a tool for community engagement in the context of climate change.
