Abstract
While the International Commission for the Protection of Lake Geneva, through research and ecological monitoring conducted by various scientific institutes, plays a central role in monitoring the lake, it is not the only entity watching over this iconic ecosystem. For more than sixty years, often less visible stakeholders—associations, local communities, fishermen, divers, boaters, and ordinary citizens—have also made a decisive contribution to its preservation. Who are these “sentinels” of Lake Geneva, and how have they helped protect it? This article offers a well-documented tribute by the author to the past and present roles of these stakeholders in the environmental stewardship of the lake, while acknowledging the inherent limitations of this collective narrative.
