Sylvicultural implications of reforestation of agricultural land

Abstract

In 1993, a two-day workshop was held in Edinburgh under the auspices of the European Union's DG VI; the theme of the meeting was the silvicultural impacts of the establishment and first clearings of woodland planting schemes on farmlands. The article provides a detailed account of the areas of discussion, which covered environmental background, the selection of suitable tree species, planting and first clearings, genetic selection and stand management, whilst taking into account the various functions of the woodlands.
