Abstract
In flood-prone areas occupied by man that cannot be evacuated, natural flood risk prevention requires flood management schemes to be introduced in addition to the flood forecasting and flood warning system. Three examples of management schemes are analysed to draw the main conclusions. Dynamic management of flood areas, reorganising the normal river course, removal of run-off obstacles, constructing dikes in threatened areas are some of the measures envisaged that could be combined to reach an optimum solution acceptable to the local authorities. Discussion, communication, respect for the environment are all part of the search for particular solutions to be situated in a much wider context of global flood management at catchment area level.
