Abstract
Space observation of the continental biosphere has been the object of a growing development since this technique offers large possibilities in the fields of water management and soil characterization. In this article, we will present the most recent developments oriented towards the determination of parameters which describe free waters and which manage the water cycle, as well as of parameters which manage the lateral and vertical flow redistribution. We will then present the national and international context through large international programs and through the various research teams that work in this field. Finally, we will discuss the perspectives foreseen for the coming years, and the research topics necessary to meet the current requirements.
