Abstract
Molecular biology has become essential in the study of biological processes involved in wastewater treatment. This paper presents the main tools currently available that allow the characterization of microbial populations in activated sludge: quantification, identification and biodiversity. The information obtained, together with that from process engineering, allows for a better understanding and optimization of wastewater treatment plant functioning.
