Abstract
Electrofishing is widely used to survey fish and shrimp biodiversity in freshwaters, notably in connection with the compulsory monitoring of the ecological status of running waters. However, there are numbers of issues for using electrofishing in tropical streams, notably because water conductivity can be extremely low, and sympatric communities of shrimp and fish can reach very high biodiversity values. Over the last decade, two French government research and management institutions (INRAE and OFB) have collaborated with a private company (HYDRECO-Guyane) to document the terms and conditions for a proper use of electrofishing in small tropical streams. Various tests were conducted at laboratory and in natura (French Guiana, French West Indies islands, La Réunion Island) to optimize electrofishing settings for the capture of fish and shrimp, the estimation of species richness and abundance, and to respect animal welfare. Research contributes to improve environmental monitoring and to give recommendations to contractors and promoters of electrofishing programs in small tropical streams.
