Abstract
Arable plants (wild plants of cultivated areas) are often regarded as undesirable by the agricultural world. This view, as well as farming intensification induced a general decline of these species. In Poitou-Charentes, inventory and conservation actions of arable plants have been conducted for three years, accompanied by an awareness-raising campaign among the farming community to highlight the importance of arable plant conservation. Funded by the DREAL Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the “Programme Messicoles” in Poitou-Charentes, following a first program with similar content carried out between 2005 and 2009, is composed of three parts: arable plants inventory throughout “Poitou-Charentes” region, communication with educational tools and conservation actions in partnership with the farming community and managers of natural areas. The associations Charente Nature, Deux-Sèvres Nature Environnement, Nature Environnement 17, Vienne Nature and the Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux have worked together to safeguard arable plants by raising awareness-raising among operators and owners of fields hosting highly vulnerable species
