Abstract
A research group at the INRAE research farm in Saint-Laurent de la Prée is testing a participatory approach to preserving biodiversity. The approach is based on an adaptive management method with a ‘result-based’ logic. In this article, the authors present the characteristics of the farm, the approach and the monitoring methods for the 11 target species chosen. An analysis of the first years of application of the approach (2021, 2022 and 2023) shows variable results depending on the target species, categorised into four groups of results. The authors then discuss the lessons learnt from this first deployment of the approach. Given that the collective applies dynamic management, making choices on the farm on the basis of the results obtained each year, the approach generates continuous learning, particularly in terms of the functioning of the ‘farm system’ and a certain culture of compromise. The authors discuss the conditions for its possible generalisation to areas comprising a diversity of farms.
