Abstract

Tarping, which is a mechanical method consisting of covering the ground with a material to create a physical barrier to plant growth, is a regularly cited but poorly documented control method for Asian knotweed. To improve our knowledge of tarping in order to identify the key factors, we carried out a literature review and collected feedbacks on tarping experiments. Although tarping seems to be used more and more frequently in France and abroad, the highly diverse technical practices observed lead to highly contrasting results. However, by analysing the data collected, we show that tarping can be effective under certain conditions, and can even lead to complete eradication. To achieve this, it is essential to take into account the biological characteristics of knotweed. We therefore recommend (if eradication is the objective) that the entire stand be covered, with a distance of 4 meters beyond the edge of the visible stand (taking into account the expansion capacity of rhizomes) during at least 6 years, using a resistant material (with an equivalent lifespan). A regular monitoring throughout the operation is essential to ensure that the tarping system is sealed.
