Abstract

The clayey coastal marshes of the Charente estuary, transitional zones between land and water, host a rich patrimonial biodiversity but are also colonized by invasive species such as creeping water primrose (Ludwigia peploides). This plant alters the hydraulic functioning of the channels, disrupts ecosystems, and impacts activities like agriculture. Costly regulation programs are implemented, combining dredging operations and manual removal of the plant. In other peat bogs along the Atlantic coast, water primrose also spreads over wet meadows. Experiments conducted by INRAE, in partnership with the Syndicat Mixte Charente Aval and the University of Rennes, have shown that water primrose can germinate both on the clayey soils of these marshes as well as on dredged sludge, confirming the risk of terrestrial invasion. However, some practices, such as establishing a vegetative cover with seeded ryegrass, appear promising in limiting this spread. For marsh managers, this risk must be taken into account when developing management plans, especially in the context of growing tensions linked to climate change, where balancing different land uses is crucial.
