Abstract

The SalmoGlob project carried out within the DECOD joint research unit and the MIAME group, in partnership with the North Atlantic Salmon Working Group of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES/CIEM WGNAS), has significantly strengthened the scientific basis for stock assessment of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the North Atlantic. A new model was developed to analyze the population dynamics of Atlantic salmon in all twenty-five management units (MUs) of the South European, North European and North American continental complexes of populations. It integrates multiple and heterogeneous data sources available in all MUs since 1971. It represents population dynamics in the form of an age- and life-stage-structured model, making it possible to integrate available knowledge of the species' biology and ecology, and to represent the effect of environmental pressures at different scales and life stages. It can be extended to better represent demographics and to assimilate new sources of data. The model is a new tool to understand and predict the effect of global changes on population dynamics and productivity, and to evaluate management scenarios within a probabilistic framework that takes into account all sources of uncertainty. A software suite and a web application have been developed to simplify and enhance the robustness of the entire data processing chain, right through to the model results. This new model represents a major qualitative leap forward compared with previous assessment tools. It improves the quality of scientific advice on the status of populations to inform management in the context of adaptation to global change. This new modeling framework has been officially adopted for the international assessment of salmon by ICES in 2024.
