Abstract

Faced with the proliferation of illegal landfills and a lack of resources, the Cameroonian authorities are looking for other solutions to finance municipal waste management. For this purpose, EPR is an essential tool. This study aims to analyze to what extent the implementation of EPR can increase the recycling rates of packaging waste and limit illegal dumping in Cameroon. It explores the duties of producers in terms of managing this type of waste in some countries that have successfully implemented an EPR system in this area. The study reveals that in these countries, producers are subject in particular to the obligation to fully finance the collection and treatment of waste from the products they place on the market. However, the implementation of a packaging EPR scheme in Cameroon could face several constraints, in particular the lack of a specific legal framework, and the waste sector failures broadly. To set up a packaging EPR scheme in Cameroon, it is recommended that the authorities strengthen the regulatory framework, which is essential to organize it.
