Abstract
The subject of our study focuses on the figure of associative drinking water services in France. In the 1960s and 1970s, residents created drinking water management structures to have access to individual service, they borrowed a form of self-organization. This communication, informed by work from a recently defended doctoral thesis (July 2024), seeks to understand the role of territorial proximities in the adaptation and sustainability of water associative services. The main study areas are located in the departments of Nièvre, Loire-Atlantique and Bretagne. We will briefly outline the qualitative methodology used, mainly based on semi-structured interviews and site visits. Then, we will also present the local and global issues of hydro-climatic change and alteration of water quality that threaten the sustainability of both public and associative drinking water services. Finally, this communication aims to show the essential role of proximity in the functioning of these associative services and questions their place in the evolution of the latter.
