Abstract
Soil and water bioengineering is an alternative or complementary solution to civil engineering for stabilizing river banks. These techniques are still not widely used in the French West Indies, and mostly uses non-native species, despite the richness of the local flora, which represents a promising potential. The lack of knowledge about native species and their compatibility with soil and water bioengineering techniques is a major obstacle that we intend to help overcome. This article presents the results of a series of experiments carried out as part of the 'Protéger' project, which aims to develop and promote plant engineering in the French West Indies. Ex situ measurements, conducted on a set of 27 riparian species (12 woody species, 3 semi-woody species, 2 shrubs, 4 pteridophyte species and 5 angiosperm herbaceous species) were used to characterise biotechnical traits of interest for soil and water bioengineering (vegetative propagation capacity, growth, root length, root diameter, root biomass/aboveground biomass ratio). The most relevant native species to incorporate into the main techniques used in soil and water bioengineering were identified using an original multi-criteria analysis method, providing the information needed to guide operational recommendations. These results are the first milestone in the development of soil and water bioengineering in the Caribbean.
