Abstract

Yaoundé’s rapid urban growth has been accompanied by a steady increase in household waste production, making waste collection increasingly difficult. This study analyses the spatial accessibility of the waste collection service in the Yaoundé VI district municipality by combining field surveys and geographic analysis using GIS. A survey conducted among 530 households assessed collection frequency, distance to collection points and residents’ satisfaction levels. In parallel, the GPS coordinates of collection points were recorded and integrated into QGIS software to study their spatial distribution. The results reveal a high concentration of waste bins in central neighborhoods and along major road axes, while several peripheral areas remain poorly served. Over 71% of households surveyed reported being dissatisfied with the service. Furthermore, statistical tests highlight a significant relationship between household satisfaction, collection frequency, and access distance to collection points. However, collection frequency appears as the most decisive factor in the perception of service quality. This study shows that inequalities in spatial accessibility and the irregularity of the service contribute to the degradation of the urban living environment and the proliferation of illegal dumping. It also highlights the benefits of combining field surveys, GPS data and GIS to support spatial planning for waste collection services in African urban contexts.
