Abstract

At the interface between aquatic and terrestrial environments, wetlands provide ecosystem services and host remarkable biodiversity. Yet these ecosystems remain highly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures, particularly in urban and peri-urban contexts. The MEDLEZ project is part of a science–society mediation approach aimed at raising awareness among schools and the wider public about wetland conservation. Co-led by scientists, natural area managers, and science communicators, the project is rooted in the watershed of the Lez River, partly designated as a Natura 2000 site, which flows through Montpellier and its metropolitan area. It also relies on a flagship species: the European otter (Lutra lutra), a semi-aquatic and elusive mammal whose recent return makes it an effective ambassador for wetlands. The project revolves around two main tools: (i) an educational kit designed to introduce the otter and wetland issues through games, visuals, and data from non-invasive wildlife monitoring, tested with schools and public events; and (ii) a photographic exhibition highlighting the perspectives of a local nature photographer, fostering an emotional connection with the environment. This article reports on the project’s objectives, tools and collaborations, aiming to foster reflections on scientific outreach, and contribute to a shared culture of wetland conservation.
