Abstract

Biological invasions are both a cause and a consequence of ecological changes observed in lakes. After clarifying the semantic nuances surrounding the definition of non-native species and the ecological mechanisms underlying their colonization into new ecosystems, we provide an overview of the challenges posed for their management through concrete examples. We highlight the variety of their direct and indirect impacts, often negative but occasionally positive. Given the difficulties in implementing effective management plans to curb their spread, we suggest adopting a multifaceted approach that incorporates the global environmental changes that affect lake ecosystems. From this perspective, the assessment of their current and future implications of non-native species to contribute to ecological functions that support the various uses of lake ecosystems could represent a next step in the management of aquatic biodiversity.
