Abstract
The methodology for dykes' diagnosis, presented in this paper, has been first developed in the context of Loire River. Nevertheless this pluridisciplinary approach may be applied to all kinds of dykes for flood protection whose main characteristics are their small height, great length, old age and rare operation. The successive steps of the diagnosis are described: history, morphodynamics, hydrology and hydraulics, visual inspection, geophysical and geotechnical investigations, modelling, risk analysis.
