Abstract
Mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services has become a standardized effort throughout France under the umbrella of the French National Ecosystem Services Assessment (EFESE) of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion. Yet, many French Outermost Regions (Territoires d’Outre-mer) still require holistic ecosystem assessments to better understand the multifunctionality of landscapes for effective land use planning. Therefore, we present a first attempt to link land uses on the island of la Reunion and the ecosystem services they supply. Based on a matrix approach, 30 experts took part in a workshop in Saint-Denis in 2023 to jointly understand the capacity of ecosystems to supply ES. The resulting maps show the spatial extent of 20 provisioning, regulating and cultural ES as well as their supply patterns in the islandscape. The ES bundles visualize the strong ES supply capacity of natural ecosystems, such as indigenous and planted forest and savanna, compared to urban and built up environments. Balanced planning is needed to safeguard valuable ES whilst at the same time allowing for urban expansion and economic development on the island. Such participatory, stakeholder-based ES mapping shows strong awareness raising and capacity building among local and regional stakeholders and has led to anchor the ES concept regionally.
