Abstract
This article explores the interrelation between water and care within the community of the Zona de Reserva Campesina (ZRC) in Venecia – Parte Alta, Colombia. Inspired by critical ethnography, this analysis and the associated results are drawn from my thesis work on mobilized values by local communities when facing threats to their way-of-being in the world. Located in the Colombian Andes and downstream from the Páramo Sumapaz, benefitting from a tropical highland climate and an environment perceived as relatively untouched by humans, the ZRC is intertwined with a water territory. While water is an ecological and symbolic resource for the community, it is also the subject of environmental disputes and water resource grabbing in the context of historical marginalization of the peasant world. As such, water, a central element of peasant life in the Venecia territory, is threatened with depletion. Faced with this threat, the Venecia community is promoting a water care ethic and fighting for autonomous, fair and sustainable water management, which are necessary conditions for effective water conservation. The analysis shows the care process in response to the threat of water depletion and the obstacles encountered by the community in completing this process.
